AEC REGENT V 30 foot FORWARD ENTRANCE DOUBLE DECK,
WILLOWBROOK BODY – DEVON GENERAL, SOUTH WALES.

Willowbrook of Loughborough was a small scale bodybuilder, a subsidiary of Duple from 1958. They largely built for the BET Group, notably, as on this model, on 30 foot AEC Regent chassis for South Wales Transport and Devon General. The model body is based on the Devon General version. The chassis and upper deck floor units are the castings produced for the LBC PRV30 East Kent kit and may not be exactly correct for the Willowbrook 30 foot versions.

The AEC Regents were:

  • Eight AEC Regent Vs delivered to Devon General in 1963. 507 (507 RUO) and 508 (508 RUO) were converted to open-top in 1976 and were appropriately named “Prince Regent” and “Regency Princess” respectively.

Note that the Devon General 30 foot Willowbrook Regent Vs had a three piece destination display, different from the single aperture display used on the 1965/1966 Regents.

Photographs of the Devon General buses can be found in Devon General” by Leslie Folkard and Philip Platt (Roundoak 1994), in “Glory Days, Devon General” by Colin Morris (Ian Allan 2006) and in “Devon General” by Leslie Folkard (Devon General Society, 2007). An excellent colour image of 501 (501 RUO) is in “National Bus Company – the early years” by Kevin Lane (Ian Allan 2004).

  • About 60 AEC Regent Vs delivered to South Wales Transport between 1960 and 1964. Modelling early versions requires slightly shallower skirts, split windscreens, divided leaves to the entrance doors and other detail changes. Reference to photographs is strongly recommended.

Photographs of the SWT buses can be found in South Wales Transport” by Alan Townsin and Chris Taylor (TPC 1989).

  • Five AEC Regent Vs delivered to Walsall Corporation in 1961. Modelling these requires shallower skirts, hinged cab doors, split windscreens, sliding entrance doors and other detail changes. The position of the sliding entrance doors requires conversion to an unusual pillar spacing. Again please check with photographs.

Note that by the fitting of the appropriate bonnet units and by some changes to the configuration of the front of the driver’s cab, together with skirt and entrance door modifications as indicated above for the earlier SWT buses, this model could be converted to represent the Leyland PD3s operated by Stratford Blue.
